One of the most BEAUTIFUL (and misunderstood) verses in the bible.
Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4
This verse begs the question: What does it mean to take delight in The Lord?
The definition of delight is “great pleasure.” Take great pleasure in The Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Worship Him in all your actions, spend time with Him, speak with Him, honor Him, love Him; this is what it means to take delight in Him. Does this mean that if you truly take pleasure in God, He will fulfill your earthly desires? I see this happen so often with Christians and I have been guilty of it myself. Something that I’ve been waiting for, praying for, hoping for- it happens how I wanted it to! I give a quick little thanks to God and quote this verse like, “YES!!! I’ve been close with God lately so He’s fulfilling my desires!” No, I do not think that is the case. I don’t believe that good things will happen to you BECAUSE you take delight in The Lord; Matthew 5:45 says, “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous.” Earthly desires can be fulfilled rather you take delight in The Lord or not. Psalm 37:4 is saying that if you are TRULY delighting in the Lord- you are spending time with Him daily, you are praying to Him, worshipping Him, honoring Him and passionate about drawing closer to Him; HE WILL BECOME YOUR DESIRE. Take delight in The Lord and He will reveal Himself to you! What a comfort that is! The desire to know Him more and take delight in Him, will result in Him revealing Himself to you more and more.
To be honest, when I first thought of this verse in that way, I was sort of disappointed. Wouldn’t it be nice if we got a reward of what we want on Earth just because we are delighting in The Lord? But that is not our calling, is it? That is not the goal of the Christian life. I want to be as close as humanly possible to our Heavenly Father. The thought of Him revealing Himself to me more and more the more I desire Him satisfies FAR greater than any earthly desire I can have. What a beautiful, beautiful gift from God- Himself.
